The artist.

Timothy White is an Australian ceramicist; maker of beautiful, unique, wheel-thrown, and handcrafted porcelain pieces.

Having studied a Diploma of Art and Design (Ceramics) as well as a Graduate Diploma of Education (Art and Craft), over the years Tim has worked to develop his own style through throwing on the wheel, mixing his own glazes and also firing of kilns.

He began working in stoneware and now specialises in porcelain, finding that porcelain is less forgiving than other clays but that the rewards are considerable.

He is now working with lustres and finding this intriguing; the finished result is always unpredictable and the effect ensures that each piece is truly unique. The opening of the kiln following a lustre firing is always an event in itself.

The approach.

MAKING:
All work is made in porcelain, is wheel-thrown and finished by hand

TOOLS:
Hand tools are used for the making of the vessels as well as for trimming of the product. The off-cuts of clay are then recycled into a ‘slip’ to be reused. The colours are painted, dipped or sprayed onto the work, a similar technique to that used on majolica ware.

GLAZING:
All of the glazes are made and developed by Tim, and are applied to the vessels by the method of either dipping or spraying to achieve the desired effect.

FIRING & FINISH:
All of Tim’s work is fired in an electric kiln to 1280 degrees celsius, creating a clean glaze finish. This is necessary for the work to become fully vitrified and to enable the holding of liquids in a vessel if desired. The end result is a high-fired porcelain vessel; a truly unique, handmade piece. Tim is proud to be able to produce one-of-a-kind pieces for the enjoyment of all.
